Evaporative Air Coolers: 6 Common Myths and What Is Actually True

Many assumptions circulate about evaporative air coolers, also called air coolers or evaporative coolers. Some are too optimistic, others too pessimistic. Here are the six most common myths.

Myth 1: "An evaporative air cooler cools like an air conditioner"

No. An air conditioner cools with a compressor and refrigerant, regardless of humidity. An evaporative air cooler uses evaporation and works best in dry air. It is an economical alternative, but not a like-for-like replacement. You will find the comparison in the article Evaporative air cooler vs. portable air conditioner.

Myth 2: "It still achieves a lot in muggy weather"

Only to a limited extent. The more humid the air, the less water evaporates. An SRF test (Kassensturz) also showed that household units cool little in small rooms and that humidity rises. More on this under Evaporative air coolers and humidity.

Myth 3: "It works best in a closed room"

The opposite is true. An evaporative air cooler needs air exchange so that the humid air can escape. Ventilate indoor spaces regularly.

Myth 4: "It uses practically no electricity"

It uses considerably less than an air conditioner, but not nothing. According to the data sheet, the Y5 requires 0.2 kW, and the Y20 and Y30 1.1 kW each. According to the manufacturer, the consumption of the Y20 and Y30 is up to 90 per cent lower than that of air conditioners. Details in the electricity cost comparison.

Myth 5: "It needs no maintenance"

Water, tank and cooling pad must be kept clean, otherwise germs and deposits can form. Maintenance is simple, but necessary. See Maintenance and care.

Myth 6: "Bigger is always better"

A unit that is too large in a small room humidifies unnecessarily strongly. Choose the model according to the floor area, see Model comparison Y5 to Y30.

Conclusion

An evaporative air cooler is neither a miracle device nor a toy. In the right rooms it cools economically and effectively. If you would like to know whether it suits your use, ask us.
