Ice Cubes in an Evaporative Air Cooler: Does It Help?

It sounds logical: cold water, cold air. That is why many people ask whether ice cubes in the water tank of an evaporative air cooler bring more cooling. The honest answer: a little, but less than you might think.

How cooling arises in an evaporative air cooler

Cooling arises mainly from water evaporating at the wet cooling pad. The evaporating water draws heat from the air, see Evaporative cooling explained. What matters most are therefore humidity, air stream and the pad, not primarily the water temperature.

What ice cubes can do

  • Cold water can cool the air a little extra, as long as the ice has not melted.
  • The effect is small and lasts only briefly, because the ice melts quickly.
  • It replaces neither the right unit size nor good ventilation.

What to check beforehand

Read the operating instructions of your unit and, if in doubt, ask us whether ice in the tank is intended for your model. Also do not use any additives that are not provided for in the documents. How to change the water properly and maintain the tank is explained in Air cooler maintenance & care.

What really helps instead

  1. The right unit size for the area, see How many air coolers do I need?
  2. Good air exchange so that humid air can escape.
  3. A clean cooling pad and fresh water.
  4. A well-chosen location, see Positioning an evaporative air cooler correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Does the air get much cooler with ice?

The effect is limited and short-lived. The most important factor remains evaporation.

Which water should I use?

Fresh, clean tap water. Tips in Water in the air cooler.

Conclusion

Ice cubes are at best a small extra, not a substitute for the right unit in the right place. We are happy to answer questions via our contact form.
